SLAUGHTERING RATES
AN IXCKEASE ASKED FOE. Last week a request was made by a deputation of slaughtermen engaged at Ngahauranga to the managing director of the Wellington Meat Export' Co. for an increase in slaughtering rates. An increase of ss. nor 100 i'or sheep, and rates in proportion for iambs, was asked for. The deputation based their request liistly on the increasa in tho cost of living sir.ee the present award rates covering slaughtering operations came into force, and secondly upon tho roughness and hardness of the sheep slaughtered, and the scarcity of lambs in proportion thereto. Also criticism on the malily of the work turned out by the slaughtermen, which made it impossible* for the slaughtermen to keep up their average output. The men contended Hint under these conditions they were worse of!' than (hey were at the time the present rates were granted. Consequent upon the refusal by the company to concore, the request, the slaughtermen will meet this morning to go fully into the whole matter.
