BIG HANDICAP GOES TO AMYTHAS = MICIIAELA WINS OPEN SPRINT HOORFOWL AGAIN SUCCESSFUL The Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting was advanced another stage yesterday with the riilining of the second day's events, Being a holiday, the attendance was very large, and was easily 011 cof the' biggest ever seen on the tourso. The club were favoured with line weather, but a northerly wind nt intervals made things a little unpleasant The going was much better than on tin* opening day. Speculation was very spirited, nnd the totalisator handled .£85,•M0, as against ifi3,1)50 103. on the corresponding day last year. So far the machine has handled .£134,028 10s., as compared with ,£119,100 for the two-day' meeting .'last year. The racing was again of a Inch standard, and Mr. H. Coyle's handicapping was once more responsible for 6ome exciting finishes. An unfortunate incident marred the running of the ICelburn Plato. Silver Link had just caught Moorfowl when the saddle slipped and Jockey A. J. Nf'Flinn was dislodged. He had a heavy fall, but fortunately he escaped w>tli a bad shakirj. THE RACING DESCRIBED.
Heavy speculation was indulged in on thb opening event, Prince Hal, Rftiland, Parorangi. Fulica, nnd . Santorini all cjvrryiiitf over four figures on the muchir,e.' P.irGrangl set out to win from end to end, nnd he let! into the straight from Santorini. Railand finished fast from the distance, • and got up to win by a head. Chaeronia was close up, $nd then came Santorini and Mumble. For the January Welter Handicap Brackenfield and Lingerie were the best backed. Bonetter, Burrangong, and Royal Exchange being scratched. From a, fnir start tho two favourites quickl.V established themselves in front, and they led into the straight. At the distance Lingerie was in trouble, and Bracken field had to be shaken up to Tes'st challenges by Old Gold and NiglitraideY. J1 ho trio crossed the lino together, the judge giving tho decision to Brackenfield by n head, with Old Gold the same distant"! away. Demagogue and Bagdad wer« next. , _ . Eight and Left, Gasbag, and Demand were all evenly hacked for the. Fitzherber*' Handicap. Saima and Blackmail led into tho straight, with Eight and Left prominent. A furlong from liorno Eight and Left shot out, and though Gasbag challenged vigorously, the top-weight held his own, and won by a narrow margin. Demand was a head away, and then came Blackmail. Only four starters contested the ICel- , burn Plate, Moorfowl being a very shortpriced favourite. Mr. O'Connor got the field off well together, and after they had gone two furlongs Moorfowl and Silver Link were clear of the other'pair. The last-named bad tho favourite in trouble, when suddenly her saddlo slipped, and sho started bucking. M'Pliun was thrown heavily. This allowed the favourite to win easily from Spanner and Astinome. Surveyor, Ivilrttsh, and Paddington Green were withdrawn from the Racing Club Handicap, Amythas, who was ridden by G. 1 Young, was made a pronounced favourite, over 00 being registered on his number. He took chargo at the stand the first time, and, attended by Bonnie Maid, he led a bunched field to tho half-mile. Hero Oratress, was in the rear with Snub. The favourito then came away, and was two lengths cicalas tho straight was entered. Then Oratress ran into second place, but in tho run home 6he could not make any impression on tho leader, who won easily bv a length. Snnb finished on, and got third place, nnd then came Rod Ribbon and Marqueteur,
All started for the Douro Cup. TIIO public selected the bracketed pair (M'atatans and Guanaco), but Starland and Stecpholm were also well bached. Swance River was the quickest to begin, while Volube and Steepholm dwelt at the post. Down the back Matatane joined Swanee River, and tho pair led Trespass and Black Hill. At the four furlongs the posi£ioiis\iero the same, but shortly afterwards Black Hill fell back. Mandrake, War Baby, and Trespass were behind the leaders entering the straight, but tlio last-named then 6hot out and von comfortably. Active and Borealis had a duel for second place, and tlio former aaiin finished in the position. Risingham, Mandrake, Swanee River, and I'alstaff wero the next to finish.
Thero wns another very heavy pool in the Metropolitan Handicap, over'.£l2,ooo being ni lis "P. Only six horses started, but five of them carried over four figures. Surveyor was at the shortest price. . He began well, and led a bunched field into the straight. He was then challenged by Micliaela, and the pair fought a ding-dong finish, victory resting with the mare, who won by .1 neck 80-Pcep was two lengths away third. All.started but Sweet Memory nnd Santorini in the Camp Handicap, five furlongs, for apprentice riders. From a food start Blissfulness, Kinsem, and Asterina were early in the lead. These three -were first into the straight, with JJustard Pot coming fast 011 the outside The first day's winner wenb on to win bv a length and a quarter, with Kinsem a half a length behind Asterinn ( third. Arch Lassie was fourth
