TRENTHAM RACES
PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY
If the weather clears Iho Summer Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, which is lo oncn to-day, should be the most successful yet experienced by the club.
Particulars of the train service are advertised in this issue. Racing will commence at noon with tho Trentham Welter Handicap, one mile. Two three-year-olds in lalsialt and Nightraider arc at the top pf the list, but they may both <bc held sate bv Prince Hal. a winner at Awapuni. Another useful sort in the race is ilatatane. who is partial to the soft going. Voluble is another horse with a chance. Ho is not meeting the strong fields that contested the races he started in during the Christmas holidays. Tho Nursery Handicap, five furlongs, has drawn an acceptance of sixteen horses. They are not a good lot, ami the list is headed by Saima, a dual wm ner at Marton. and Weldone, winner ot two races at Ellerslie. Othei winners engaged are Canyon, Handy, Askari, and Little River. The last-named is one oi the useful Martian breed, and he may be eoual to accounting, for the others. Demand. Insurrection, and Pente can all go fust, but may suffer on the wore of horsemanship. Tho Anniversary Handicap is an open welter, with a fair held engaged. Hi" actual favourite may be Bagdad, who ijmore than useful when the sting is ont of the ground. Demagogue, a useful sprinter, may be the best of tho others. Tho scratching pen will be freely used in tho Trial Plate, in which the conditions of the race greatly favour the three-rear-olds. Were the event a handicap Flight Commander would be at the top of Ihe list, instead of receiving lO.b. Ho is sure to go well, as will Trespass, n more than useful three-year-old, Early Dawn and Makepeace. The last-named was held to be unlucky not to have won Iht. Shortliind Piute at Ellerslie The nrincipal event of the day will follow the Trial Plate. This is tho Wellington Cut>. Had the weather remained fine the ton-weight, Karo, would prooiiblv havo been favourite, but by genera consent it is held that the going will prove against her, burdened as she is with 9st. 71b. , . ~ ~ The next on the list to claim attention ir, Surveyor. Sst. 4lbl The Stead-owneu three-vear-old ran several good races in Melbourne, but he looks a trifle on the oretty side, and such a long-striding colt mav not be seen to advantage over the last two furlongs. Mascot. Sst. 21b., is the eye of the handicau I)"t sho is not often caugnt in a good mood, and at Ellerslie put no heart into her work. Battle Song. 7st. 131b., likes the going soft, and on his best form lie is deservincr of consideration. Red Ribbon has shown no form of Into, and Kilmoon is suffering from a bruised heel. Impediment appears to be backward, while Alteration is hardly class enough. , . ~ Oratress won three races during tho holidays. Sho looks a picture, and is sure to play a bold part ««»««*; incut of the race, so, too, will PunU, a Great Autumn Handicap winner, who is well handicapped. The actual favourite may bo Amythas, a winner at his last three attempts. The Demosthenes gelding will saddle up well, and should run a great race. He goes well in the soft going, and was successful on the same track in the autumn under conditions similar to thoso of to"riie two-vear-olds Moorfowl and Right and Left will engage the attention oT backers in the Wellinrion bUkes Though penalised, tho Chokcbore fill) will have somewhat the best of it in'the malterlof horsemen. Though Arrowsmith may be a good f - mmte in tho Telegraph Handicap the r is not by any means the gooi thing for him that the support given h m would indicate. Ho is a very sn.iit snrinler. but he will be opposed by a betlev field to-day than he has yet met. Silver Link. Statuette, and Spanner will go with him from the jump, and they mav find a weak spot in the armour of e in Sorted horse. Horses like Maiol.a, Michatla and Tigritiya. all good fimshKwtita part in the .closing scenes °Vno Itenehu Handicap, «x farlong., k for hacks, and is the concluding event. Ruddy Sweet Memory, and Hyn.arty can early in the .race, and the" mav take part in the finish.
