OBITUARY

PROFESSOR MACLAURIN. Boston, January 10. Professor Richard Cockburn M.tclaurin is dead, aged 50.—Aus.-N.7i. Cable Assn. ("Professor Maclaurin, who is a native of Scotland, lias been president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1909. He. was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, and from the New Zealand University went to-Cam-bridge and Strasburg. Ho held the position of Professor of Mathematics in the Victoria College, Wellington, from 1898 to 1905, and was dean of tile Faculty of J„aw in New Zealand from 1905 to 1907. Tn 1907 ho wont to Columbia University, New York, as Professor of Mathematical Physics, and there secured the decrees of doctor of science and doctor of laws. He is the author of several scientific works. Ho married Miss Young, of North Auckland, and thero are two children. Dr. J. S. Maclaurin, Wellington, is a brother of the late professor.]
