ILLEGAL USE OF SOVEREIGNS
o GANG ARRESTED IN LONDON, (Rec. Jauuary 20, 0.35 a.m.) London, January 10 Observing the extensive withdrawals of gold from the Bank of England during recent months, by persons insisting on their legal right to receive gold for bank-notes, the Bank authorities instituted inquiries, which resulted to-day in the simultaneous arrest of seven persons by a largo number of police, operating in various parts of London. They will bo charged with utilising tho gold currency for an illegal purpose. Tho present" commercial value of gold shows a profit 'of 28s. per ounce on melted sovereigns. It is estimated that the gang's withdrawals from tho Bank of England during the last few months were over ,s:iO0,00O.-Aus.-N.Z. Cnblo Assn.
