| STUDENTS IN MANUFACTURES AN IMPERIAL PROPOSAL. •Mr. H. Mainland (president) occupied the chair at a .meeting of the Wellington Industrial Association, held in the association's rooms last evening. Mr. If. !■'. Allen (secretary) reported Unit all arrangements had been made respecting the conference of the Industrial (to be held in Dunedin on February i, 5, and fi). and that, judging by tho remits received and the papers prepared, the conference promised to bo .1 very successful ono.

The secretary read the. following letter, which had been sent to tho High' Commissioner for New Finland bv the Trade and Industry Committee of'the Kova! Colonial Institute, and forwarded by the Commissioner tn the association:—'

"Dear Sir,—Referring to previous correspondence, my committee has now tn working order the scheme for finding manufacturers in this conn try willing to train students from the overseas Dominions and colonies, who. having completed their university or high school courses, are desirous of pursuing industrial studies in factories in this country. Manufacturers are in almost all cases willing to mako favourable terms for such students, especially in suitable cases, but it is stipulated that the applicants should be recommended by this committee and to this end, and to savo time it has been necessary to prepare a, questionaire, a copy of which is enclosed. A student filling; in this form and sending it to me direct' or through vour office will then be able to have his case attended to immediately. I beg that you will bring the contents of this letter and a copy of the questionaire before those it may concern, as it is fe.lt that the matter is important, especially in view of tho activity of American and other foreign manufacturers to induce young men from the overseas Dominions to take their training in foreign countries—l am, yours truly (Sgd.) Harold T. Poolev, secretary Trade and Industry CommitTho questions on the form of application wero:-(1) Full name; .'2) date and place of birth; (3) nationality of parents; \i) hnvo you any relative concerned in an industry in similar to that in which vou desire training in this countrr, if so in what capacity? (5) education, slating degrees and diplomas (if any); ((!) works or business experience (if any); (7) typo of training required (stating nature of industry in which experience is required, noting carofuiiv any Particular branch in which you desire to spwialse}; (S) are you prepared to pay a premium if the particular works "i' li. which you desire "to serve should requira it? (D) have you an appointment m view in at the end of your training here? (10) or do you desire, to return fo in a branch house (if any) of, the firm by whom you will b? trained? (11) or do you wish to practice individually or to set up a business of your own at-tho conclusion of vour period of training? (12) please state" ns exactly as possiblo tho precise aim and purpose*you have in view if not already set out' in ?, 10, and 11 j (13) do you 'intend to attend university .'courses whilst! ■undergoing '.raining? (U) please furnish two references as to character, working experience, ar..t general efficiency. The president said tho question was whether if they sent students to Tingland would they get them back again? The secretary said that ono of the questions on the paper was whether they wished fa remain in the country. TFe mentioned that copies of the letter had been forwarded to Dv.nedin, and would bo discussed at the conference.

Messrs. P. W. Vosseler and P. W. Vickovman announced that they would not bo able/ to go to Dunedin as delegates to tho Federation Conference of tho association.
