A Press Association message from Christckurch states that Mr. John 1. Murphy Deputy-Commissioner ot Stamps, died yesterday after a few days illness. The deceased joined the Stamps Department over 35 years, ago m Wellington, where ho was stationed for many years, and where ho was particularly well known. Before proceeding to Chnsichuich, the late Mr. .Murphy was De-puty-Commissioner of Stamps in Dunjediu. He look a keen interest m, all branches of sport, and wns a prominent member of tho Christchurch dolt Uuu.

As stated in The Dominion yesterday, tho Victoria University College Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening filled the chair of modern languages by the appointment of Mr. E. -T. Wilson, M -V., B.Sc.,' vice Mr. von Zedlitz. Alt applications were considered by an adv sory committee in London, consisting of Mr. J. W. Mill, M.A. New Zealand University agent in London; Professor L E. Kastncr (Manchester University), Professor 13. Weckley, M.A. (Nottiyam University College); and Professor J. 1 • Brandon, M.A. (London University CqlW) The committee was unanimous in recommending Mr. Wilson .as the most suitable candidate. Born in Jse* /«- land, Mr. Wilson was educa ed at kelson College and Canterbury College, and Xrwnrfb studied at Cambridge, where lie obtained a first class in the modem languages tripos. Later lie spent some ime in Europe. Mr. Wilson » at present lecturer in charts of the modern lan-uages department in the University, o \Vestern Australia, where he has dona much to raise the standard oi modern language teaching.
