A conference of local bodies' delegates was held at Carterton to-day to deal with the allocation of the cost of improvement to tho Rimntnka Road. At a pr«-v.-oiis conference held in July last the Wairarnpa local bodies unanimously aireed to recognise their liability in ropard to the road from th" boundary of j'cntherston to the Summit. Bv a'majority vote it was decided, to recommend a contribution of 50 ncr cent. The, estimated cost "of the work proposed, is .090QA. of which .EiOflO is for bridges, and the balance for road repairs. Provision Ims been made in the Public Works Estimates for 50 per cent of the total cost of this work, and lo expedite the matter the Fentherston County Council submitted the following proposal for allocation of the cnsl = to tho various liod.ies interested :—Fn!,(her=ton County. 50 per cent, of JMSnO; Wairarnpa South Oninly, 20 per cent.; Mnsterton County, 8 per cent.: Masterton Borough, 8 per cent..: Carterton Borough. 3 per cut.: Greyfown Boroueh, 2* per cent.; Fenthei'sto" Borough, 21 nor cent.; CaV. tlepoint. Ekctehnnn. and" Manriceville Counties, and Martinborou<rh Town Board. U per cent. each. Tt was intended that' flip subsequent maintenance of the road should be borne in the same pro•portions. Ekefnhuna Counties did not recognise any liability and were not represented at to-day's conference at Carterton. Those r"nresonted were the Carterton. Greyfown, Masferton, and Feathersfon Boroughs, the Masterton, Fentherston. Cnstlcnoint. and Wnirarapa South Counties, and tho Martin'uorough • Town Board.

Mr. 0. Donald was elected chairman, and after a general d.-scussiou it wan decided to recommend the various authorities to a/.'i-cfl to the following allocaI'on:—Feathersfon County, 50 n«r cent.; Wairarana South, 15 per cent.: J'asterton County, 11 per cent.: Ma«terton Borough. A per cnt.: Carffrlon Borough. 3 per cent.: Clreytown Borough, 2} "per cent.; Fontherslon Boroug-li, 3 per "cent.; Afartinbnrouirli Town Board," 2 ner cent.; Mauricsyille, Eketahuna, and C««tlepoint Counties, U per cent. each. The Fentherston County is to attend to the matter of mainlenanco.

It was generally admitted that the pushing ahead of the work, especially as money is now available, was one of national importance.
