DARWIN COMMISSION
THE GOVERNMENT LIQUOR MONOPOLY. Darwin, January 14. The commission is inquiring into the Government, liquor monopoly. Mr. Callan Supervisor of Hotels, in reply to questions, stated that the loss on a4iotcl was from .CI2OO to .CIBOO a year, in spite of the profits made on liquor of from 50 to 90 per cent. Other evidence was given to show that there was much discontent regarding the quality of the liquor. Some of the beer was colloquially known as "kill-'em-stone-dead." Part of the .hotel losses was attributed to discrepancies between the quantity forwarded and the quantity that eventually came into the possession of tho hotels. It was alleged that largo quantities were stolen en route or from the trucks at Darwin.—Press Assn. --
