HYDRO-ELECTRICITY
QUESTION OF RETICULATION. (Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, January 14. At a meeting of the Kairanga County Council yesterday, a deputation from tho Palmerston North Borough Council, consisting of Messrs, E. H Crabb and 11. A. Eliott, attended to endeavour to further tho Borough Council's scheme of inducing the county councils in the district to joiji with tho borough in making arrangements in advance for the reticulation of tho current which will bo available when tho Mangahao scheme is completed. Mr. Crabb,.who is also chairman of tho Mangahao Vigilance Committee of tho .Chamber of Commerce, which was instituted for tho purposo of keeping thoso interested in tho work supplied with mftrmation as to its progress, pointed out that when. Mr. Shirk, electrical engineer to the Christchurch City Council, was in Palmerston North recently, he unhesitatingly expressed his approval of tho combination of the rural and urban districts in the matter of reticulation. S.I i-. Crabb suggested the appointment of a joint committee to go into tho matter, and referred to the benefits which would accrue from a combination. Councillor Eliott also stressed the advantages t\} be gained by such a combination. Thero would bo a reduction in cost to each body through the "peak load" being at different periods during tho twenty-four hours. Under similar conditions of supply, tho price would bo uniform both within and without theborough. Tho purchase of material would bo cheapened and staff and overhead expenses would be much reduced. Charge for power supplied would bo computed on' tho highest ]joiiit touched in tho twenty-four hours, that was to say, the "peak load." Therefore, the endeavour should be to avoid a high "peak load" with a low average con6uinption. The constant aim should bo a high average and a low "peak load," tho ideal condition being similar consumption throughout tho twenty-four hours. This could only be accomplished by having as largo and as wide a diversity of the class of consumers as possible, and this would bo gained by a combination of tho town and country industries. The experience of neighbouring counties and boroughs to the city of Christchurch who used the power from Lake Coleridge, such as the Waimari and Heathcole counties, and the boroughs of Woolston, Spreydon and Ricoarton, showed that by joining -with that city they were obtaining their power at a lower rate, as well as saving a considerable annual cost in overhead expenses, etc. Tho general consensus of opinion of tho meeting was to tho effect that more information was desirable before the council committed itself to any action, and eventually a committee was set up to go into tho matter with representatives of the Borough Council, and to report to a future meeting. SOUTHLAND POWER BOARD. By Telegraph—Press Association Invercargill, January 14. Tho final meeting of the Southland Electrification Committee was 'held today to arrange for the handing over of its affairs to tho Electric Power Board, which holds its first meeting to-morrow. The board is the first in the Dominion to lie constituted under the Electric Power Boards Act.
