DEATH OF AN EX-SOLDIER
INQUEST AND FINDING. . Vl.fr.'P. L. ITollinßs,. R.M., held an inquest yesterday iaito tho causa of death of Stephen Carkeek, who foil down in a faint in Old Custom house Street arid'anpeared tp strike his head-on the pavement. Carkeek was removed, to the hospital, where ho died on January 2. Senior-Sergeant Wado appeared' for tho police. . " ; Dr. R. B. AVatson, of tho Wellington Hospital ..staff, stated that when Carkeek was admitted he was in a dazed condition; ho had hruises on tho head and abrasions on tjio. knee "and ankle. On the following day he was'found to ho suffering from .nephritis. The man staled that ho had been drinking heavily, and that he had had -live f'i-S 'four of them during the last few : months. Ho was very shaky and tremb.linjj, and nn tho night of December 3fl' ho was delirious and very violent. His .temperature begun to.rise, and ho gradually got weaker and weaker and died fln January 2. In the opinion of witness, death was duo to heart failure,,nephritis and excessive alcohol. Garkeek had been in the Armv and had been wounded. William' Talbot, blacksmith, Parish. Street, said he knew Garkeek, who had worked for him for about IS months, lie was about 55 years of ago and. a' married man; ' Witness believed 'that Captain Garkeek was a brother of tho deceased. Witness heard of! Cnrkcek's fall in Old Customhouse Street, and saw' him on December 30, when ho was walking with two sticks. That was the last timo witness saw him. . While Carkeek was working for witness he liad several fits, two within the last three months. Other evidence was given as to tho identity of the deceased, and the Coroner found in accordance with tho medical evidence.
