THE TRAMWAY FATALITY
FUNERALS OF THE VICTIMS. The three victims of Saturday's tramway accident were buried at Kurori yesterday. A large number of relatives and friends of the Jate Mr. James Alfred M'Ewen attonded the funeral, which left St. Joseph's Church, Buckle Street, at 12 p.m. for the cemetery. Among numerous floral tributes was a wreath from tho City Tramway Department, also ono from the Pahiatua Hibernian Society. Those present at the funeral included the widow and three sons of tho deceasedJack, Bert, and Cyril; Mr. Edward M'Ewen, of Masterton (father); MecsTs. Andrew, Frank, and Stanley M'Ewon*(of Miisterton), and Messrs. Reg. and Norman M'Ewen (of Wellington), brothcro of the deceased. Messrs. Minctt and Ball, of Pahiatua, tho deceased's lato partners, were also present. Inspector Sullivan the Tramway Department. The service at the graveside was conducted by Father O'Connor. Tho late Mr. M'Ewen lrad two sisters—Mrs. M'Grauo, of Mastcrtou, and Mrs. Donald, of Stratford.
11m fimcra'l of the late Mr. James Evans took placo at 2.80 p.m. It left Morris's mortuary chapel for St. Mary of the Angels Church, in Boulcott Street, where an impressive r>ervico was held. The Bev. Father Hoar officiated nt tho. graveside. Base Records staff, _of whom deceased was ,i member, supplied tho pall-boarers. Many floral tributes were forwarded, including wreaths from the Tramway Department, Baso Records, arid the Australian Club, of which deceased was a member. The Tramways Department was represented by Inspector Sullivan, and the Australian Club by tho Eev. G. E. Hall, vicc-prceidont. ■ It is seldom that so much sympathetic intereat is manife-'-ted in a funeral as was displayed' -yesterday iu that of Motorman Josenli Small. The funeral, headed 'by tho Tramways Band, left Wilson's mortuary chapel, Newtown, at 10' a.m., and proceeded through the city, to the Karori cemetery, where an impressive service was conducted by tho Bev. E. Drake, of the Newtown (Trinity) Methodist Church. Tho funeral was one of the largest held in Wellington for some time. Members of ,the-tramway service—inspectors, motorincn, conductors, oarshed and power-house hands—attended in large numbers. They formed up in two single files, the majority of tho men being in uniform. Practically the whole of the p.m. shift was accounted for. Other branches of tho corporation service were fully represented. Those who attended included tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G., M.P.), Messrs. W. If. Morton (city engineer and general manager of the Tram/ray Department), W. Cable (ufpistant-geueral manager and electrical engineer). J. R. Palmer (town clerk), D. M'Gilliray (traffic superintendent). G. E. James (assistant traffic manager), G. Lntighiin (superintendent of tho electric lighting station), Councillor P. Eraser, M.P.. Councillor .T. Hutchison (secretary of tho Tramway Employees' Union ami Federation), Bev. T. Keith Ewen (Baptist Church, Barn-am-pere), Rev. Dr. Pinfold. Mr. C. M. Luke, and other officers of the. Trinity Methodist Church, in. which the late Mr. Small himself held office. Many beautiful floral (tributes were received, and other tramway organisations in the Dominion had forwarded telegrams of condolence. Tho pall-bearers were Motormen Marshmcnt, Fox, Tnness, and Dinneon, who have nil seen long service with the Tramway Department. All the. trams slopped running for five ininutas at 10.30 a.m. The caw wore also halted at various points while the cortege passed.
