( ] NOTES. p The most successful of tho men play- i) ers at the Wellington Championship c Tourney have been Allison and Gray, the k Otago University representatives. They 11 havo already won tho championship c doubles and the handicap doubles. Alii- « son is still left 111 tho championship singles, and ho has an excellent chanco of winning that scries, and ho had to scratch in the handicap singles when bo had a .rather better chanco of winning ft there also. Allison has to play Clark (-, in the seini-linal of the men's champion- j. ship singles, and if, as seems probable, p ho should beat tho Napier man, he will j havo to meet Bonnington in the final. 1 „ Tho two have not yet played. Bon.ning- ij ton's best performance to date was to beat Swanston, but subsequent play has proved that Swanston has completely ~ lost bis form. On the other hand, Alii- : son has beaten Peacock, and Peacock- is J, playing now a very 111m-.'; stronger/game L than Swanston. All this should moan that Allison has a good chance of boat- P ing Bonnington, !' Swanston and Peacock did not piny a '" strong gainn in fin: championship . doubles match with Allison and Gray. A £ lot of the play in this match was trashy, '.' generally !>"low the n-gula- \iorin of ;' either of I lie doubles engaged. ' In the ladies' singles ;ciiis ihere were '■' two good battles. Miss Uu«\Ki beat Mrs. Melody after a long lhroe-. ; el; struggle in 6-4, 4-0, (1-2. The other two Hughes sisters. Mis. Booth and j Mrs. K. Graves fought out the other match of the scnii-linal round, and Mrs. Booth, won in lno filraij:hl sets, G■■■■], S-G. Mrs. Booth will have to '/ntest the final round with Jie.r sister, Mi.=s 11, Hughes. As a double these two ladies have won the ladies' championship a doubles, after a three-set match with A Mrs, Parkinson and Mrs, Melody. Tho d

combined championship was won by Peacock ,an<l Mrs. Peacock, hut in the final I hey lost the first set to Walker and Miss N. Mantell, and the second ' set went to 7—5. There wero many defaults in all the handicap classes, seme of them being duo not to unwillingness on the part of competitors to play, hut to the fact that thov were in so many events that they had to abandon somo of them. This, for instance, must havo been Allison's reason for withdrawing from the handi- . mid singles, in which ho defaulted to i Clark in the semi-final. Clark is now [ in the final against Cuff, from whom lie [ receives 12 points. This should bo , about the real difference between tho two . players, and tho final should produce a ; close finish. ; In the mo.u'3 doubles the defaults on . one side cf the draw led to an almost . farcical result. Riley and Bringans got i into the final by playing only one match, and that in the first round. In the ' second, third, and fourth rounds they won bv default. On tho other sido of i tho draw Gray and Allison had to play fiverv match, five, including tho final, without once Retting- the benefit of a default It should be easily possible to conclude nil tho series to-day, but, because the same nlavers are often concerned in different events, it will bo quite n full (lay's work, and, for somo players, a hard day's work. THE ENGLISH~PLAYERS BEAMISH AND LOWE TO VISIT THE DOMINION. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association has accepted the proposal of tho Australian Association that tho English visitors. Messrs. Beamish and Lowe, should come to this country and play a series of matches here. They will arrive here earlv in March, and leave about tho middle of tho month, playing matches in Auckland, Wellington, and fihristchui'ch. It will not be possiblo for them to visit any other centres. TOuRNEUTJOTORUA By Telegraph—Press Association. Rotorua, January 3. The Jtntor.ua Tennis Tournament opened on New Year's Day, there being one hundred competitors. Excellent progress was made on- tho first day, seventy matches being played. Rain yesterday greatly hindered play, and tho weather to-dav is threatening. Competitors includo Wilding (Christchurch), Warno Pearce •;Tomuka), Miss Margery M'Farlane. Griffiths, and Rohson (Auckland). Wilding, Webster, Betram, Morton, Mitchell, Bartlett, Robson, and Pearco nre still in the men's champion singles.
