A Chicago messago states that Sheriff Peters was convinced that tho spectaclo of seeing a, man hanged would have a deterrent effect on other criminals. Ha made arrangements for two hundred inmates of the local gaol to witness'through their cell windows the execution of Buffalo Burrago, who had been conricted of murder. When Burragc stood on the scaffold prior to the drop every convict witness roared "When do we cat?" They maintained the uproar until the condemned man disappeared. Sheriff Peters, answering his critics, , asserted that tho experiment sought to , bring the fear of punishment "before the minds of men who wore over-coddled by well-meaning philanthropists.—Aus.-N.Z.
