Canterbury was continued to-day, when Auckland gave the visitors a day's leather hunting. The not out batsmen, Hemiis and .Smith, resumed at 11 o'clock and played confidently, frequent changes of bowline; failing to separate them. Ifcmus reached his century first, and 300 was hoisted as the result of three hours' play. Scoring more rapidly than his partner, Smith also reached 100, the score hoard then showing 355. Three overs later Ilemus was bowled by M'Ewin for HO, having been three hours and forty minutes at the wickets. 372—3— MA. Dacre joined Smith, and had not reached double figuies when he was caught on the boundary by Blunt, off Sandman. 3:1.1—1—9. Brooke Smith followed, and the luncheon adjournment was taken with the total at '100 for four wickets. Shortiv after resuming Brooke Smith was bowled by Road. 413-5-D. Anthonv followed, and with Smith was responsible for a remarkable partnership*, which lasted until the tea adjournment. Smith was giving a free display of batting, his driving being brilliant, and he frequently found the boundary.
