BIG FIRE AT NELSON
$. ' HEAVY LOSSES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Nelson, January 3. A disastrous fire which occurred in a wooden building in Trafalgar Street early this morning resulted in the destruction of the nrcinUes occupied by Mr. P. \Vcbster (provision merchant), part of Trathen and Co.'s shop (drapers and milliners), and Shield and Co.'s building (wine and soirit merchants). The fire brigade fought with great determination, hut the (lames having a good hold when the outbreak was discovered, spread rapidlv in the wooden buildings. Mr Webster is n heavy loser, none of his stock being saved. A good deal was saved from Shield's premises. Trathen's clothing and milliner}' departments, in brick buildings, were saved, but the main building, toother with reserve slocks, was totally destroyed. Trillion's loss ran into thousands. The oricin of the fire is a mystery. The lire is relieved to have started near Webster's premises. Insurants are: — Trnthen's stock, •ffiSTifl. building ,C'7sfl; Webster's stock, .C7<t>. building .£600; Shield's building, .P3MI. The insurances: on tho stock cannot be ascertained.
