NOTES FROM VARIOUS ! CENTRES (From Our Special Correspondents.) MANAWATU Perfect holiday iveniilior prevailed for the New Year festivities. The streets of I'iilmeriton were ' crowded on New | Year's Eve, and 1920 was ushered in with the ringing of bells, the tooting of whistles, and tne usual accompaninicnt of fircwjrks. On New Year's Day various picnic resorts were crowded with bollt old and young, and it is'quite safe to say that on uu previous occasion have so many people visited the beauty spots , of tho Esplanade, the 'l'iritea Gorge, and the Maimratu Gorgo. Great sympathy is expressed with Mr. Hugh Gillies, whoso third son, Norman, was killed in a motor accident on New Year's Day, while returning from tho Marton races. His-eldest ton was. killed in the war, and Norman had not long returned from active scrvicc, an<l ivas I only just recovering from tho effects of being gassed. On Wednesday afternoon a motor-car driven by Mr. ■ 11. Speight, of Feilding, came to grief near tho Awahuri biidgo when on the way to Ecilding. Just before reaching the. bridgo tho steering gear, failed to act, with tho result that tihe car ran off the road, and, crushing into, a post, overturned and caught lire. One of the occupants was pinned beneath tho car and had his collarbone broken, l-'m-iunaloiy he was got out in time to avoid his being severely turned. Another of the occupants was seriously injured about the head, and was conveyed to a private hospital in Feilding, where i he lies in a rather serious condition. The ; car, which was completely destroyed, j was insured in the State Office for J2250. < On December 1 there were 59 patients • in 'the Palmerston North Hospital,. 100 ] were admitted during the month, S8 wore j discharged, and seven died. Yesterday ] there wero 61 patients in the-inatitution.
