Colonel Hugh Stewart, who, before the war, was Professor of Classics at, Canterbury College, and who, enlisting | as a'private, had a remarkably successful military career, retnviraHo New Zealand last week by the Kuahinc. . A Press Association telegram from Dimedin announces the death of Mr. Alexander Burt, one of the founders of tho firm of Mes'srs. A. and T. Burt, cnirineers and ironfounders. aged 70. The late Mr. Burt was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland, and was brought up to the engineering irade in Glasgow. He went nut. (o Melbourne in 1558, and two years later 'was attracted, to Otago by the rush lo the gold diggings, Gabriel's Gully. 11l (he fnllflH'iiiif year (1862) he settled in Duneclin. and with his brother, the late Mr. Thomas Burt, established tlie engineerinir works which are well known throughout New Zealand. Tie was formerly a. member of the Dunedin City Council. and of. the Otagn Harbour Board, lie took a keen interest in technical education. and was for many years president | of the Dunedin Technical Classes Association.
