RIFLE SHOOTING

WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION r NEW YEAR MEETING RESUMED s The first annual rillo prizo mooting 9 <if tho Wellington IMllo Association held j sineo the outbreak of war, opened in iino weather at Trentham Yesterday. L)n tho whole, conditions wcro very fair for shooting, and somo good scores were registered. Althoudi tho morning I broke very dull and threatening, the weather cleared considerably Inter on, l;ut tho action of the heat on the damp | grass created a mirage in front of the | targets; and this caused some perplexity j to marksmen generally. Tho wind durg ing tho forenoon was light, but inclined [ to bo variable; after lunch, however, it j increased a good deal, and blew steadily jj .from tho right rear. | A very liberal programme was drawn !S up for tho mooting, which attracted 103 J entrants from various parts of the DoI minion, besides the Wellington province, j including 21 senior cTidots. The number of entries was far larger than in January, 1311, when tho Inst meeting too!; place. Altogether. 321 cash prizes havo been provided for tho meeting, tho total ] amount for distribution being .£320, in '! addition to numerous valuablo trophies. By far tho greater number of competitors wore members of rillo clubs, but a few Territorials partioipa'ted. ,In welcoming the competitors, President Marshall remarked that General G. S. Richardson had shown his practical sympathy with ride shooting by arranging for '23,000 rounds of ammunition to ho provided for tho present meeting free of charge. Tho General had also issued . instructions that blankets and sleeping accommodation for the competitors were to bo supplied free. These privileges were greatly appreciated by tho marksmoil attending tho mooting. | The first match of the day was a rapidj fire competition at 300yd3., tho shooting I taking place under, scrvico conditions j This match was compulsory for all comI notitors. the Defence Department having J laid it down that at least one such match I must bo included in every riflo associajj tion programme. The remainder of the S dav was occupied with tho firing of three J short-rancro matches at 300, 500, and GOO 5 vards. and two Senior Cadet matches at I 200 and 300 vards. The long .303 Leej Enfield rifle was used by tlio competitors, j and firine was confined to tho Collins and J Sommervillc ranges. j Tho meetinc; will bo continued fo-dnr, j when three long-range matches will bo j fired at FOfl. 900, and 1000 yards, and tho Chamnion Teams Match at GOO yards. The Championship Aggregate and Tyro Arcrreirato will bo decided also., Following are details of yesterday's sliootiiiEr.— SERVICE MATCH. Rapid shooting; 300 yards; seven shots. JE2—Eflmn. F. H.
