AN ENCOUNTER IN THE DARK CONFLICTING ACCOUNTS. (Itec. December 2D, 9.20 p.m.) London, December 28. Shortly after midnight on Saturday I ho occupants of the Vice-Regal lodgo were awakened by shots from the main road through Phoenix Park, about half a nule away from the lodge. The guam turned out, including Captain Boast and two mon. It was impossiblo lo see far owing to the pitch darkness. Captain Boast's party crossed tlfe polo ground and suddenly cam© face to face with a gang of men whose numbers were not ascertainable. An encounter occurred close to the monument marking tho spot where Lord Frederick Cavendishand Mr. Burke were murdered. Both parties tired, with only the width of tho road separating them. A bullet entered Captain Hoist's heart. The two soldiers continued firing until the attackers dispersed, leaving tho dead body of a comrade, in which wero six bullets.
Tho dead body ' has not been identified. Deceased was about 'forty years of age, and was wearing civilian clothes, military puttees, and bandages round his head instead of a hat. Subsequently three men loitering inside tho park gates wore arrested. It is not known whether they participated in the outrage. The authorities intend to closo (ho park each night at G o'clock. Tho reticence of tho Dublin authorities regarding the attack lins resulted in many conflicting accounts. It is rumoured- that only ,ono man attacked and that ho was ariued with an autolratio pistol. No weapons were found where tho man was killed and no shots struck tho lodge. The police withhold the names of three unarmed men who were arrested two hours after tho shooting. They declare that they were'rot awai'o of the outrage and wero merely walking in the park after a dance. Captain Boast was 19 years of age.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR WERE SHOTS INTENDED AS AN ATTACK ON LODGE? (Rec. December 29, 9.50 p.m.) ' London, December 29. Considerable mystery surrounds the Phoenix Park affair, and probably only an inquest will throw light on tho matter. It is now doubtful if tho shots wero meant seriously as an attack on tho Vice-Kegal lodge, as they proceeded from a spot on the outer edge of tho park, on the Dublin side, over a milo from the lodge. It is now stated that Captain Boast challenged a man, who refused to halt. Tlio man seized Boast by tho throat, firing at tho somo time, yet there is no trace of a weapon. Another version is that tlio dead man is Laurence Carey, a demobilised soldier, who was employed within the park and was probably returning from festivities. This report is not confirmed, and thern is no official report.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
A CLEAN-SWEEP POLICY ARREST OF EVERY ACTI/E SINN FEINER. London, December 27. The "Evening Standard's" Dublin correspondent says that Lord French is convinced that the first stop in the restoration of normal conditions in Ireland is to deal with tho intimidating forces. It is reported that action will shortly bo taken to arrest every active Sinn Femer. Though the task is gigantic, the supporters of this clean-sweep policy boliove that it can bo effectually done.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
