DROWNED IN LAKE BRUNNER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Greymouth, December 29. A sad drowning case occurred at Lake Brunner on Saturday. Two brothers, Ernest and Lewis Goodwin, wont goat shooting, setting out in a frail craft. As they did not return in the evening, search was made, and tho 'boat was discovered washed up on the beach, and the body of Lewis was discovered in Cft. of water. There was no trace of tho other brother. Ernest was 25 years of age, and was a returned soldier. Lewis was 17 years of age. Great sympathy is •felt for Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin,'who have already lost two sons on active service. DEATH FROM BURNS. Auckland, December 29. Mrs. Catherine Benjamin Warner, whfl was severely burned on Sunday morning through her nightgown .catching fire, has succumbed to her injuries. MYSTERIOUS DLSAPPEARANCE. Cltristchurch, December 29. This afternoon, George S. Hawkins, a married man, residing in Limvood, wont for a bathe at Sumner. Ho undressed in a shelter, afterwards bringing ■ his clothes out and leaving them beside his wife, who was sitting on the beach. He had a bathe and returned to his wife. Later ho again went into the sea and has not been seen since. The police made inquiries, but were unable to find anyono who had seen tho man in the water. Dragging operations were kept up till a late hour to-night, but no trace of tho body has been found. A SHOOTING- ACCIDENT. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent, Palmerston North, December 29. A shooting accident occurred at Kauvhatn, near Awahuri, to-day. Erzel Henry Bennett, aged 15, and a cousin named Hnzelwood, who is also a youth, wero shooting bird 9 with a shot gun when Haze-Wood accidentally shot Bennett in the left thigh. The injured liov was admitted to tho Palmerston North Hospital in a rather serious condition. A FALL IN CUSTOMHOUSE QUAY. A returned soldier named Stephen Carkeek, while walking in Customhouse Quay, near the Bank of Austrnlasia, yesterday, was seen to stagger and fall, and in doing so he struck his head against the pavement. When picked up Carkeek was unconscious, and Dr. Claridge, who was willed, ordered the man's removal to the Hospital. Carkeek was found to be suffering from concussion of the brain, but his condition was not regarded as serious.
