CALEDONIAN SPORTS

SUCCESSFUL REVIVAL

HUGE CROWD ON BASIN RESERVE

After a lapse of a quarter of a century Saturday saw a revival of the Caledonian Society's sports gathering in Wellington, which was eminently successful from all points of view. The meeting took place on tlie Basin Reservo and, tho weather being perfect, tliero was a huge crowd in attendance, estimated at well over 7000. The stand and all available space on either side of it.was packed and all around the grounds wcro flecked with spectators. A comprehensive sports programme of generous dimensions was carried out during the day, aiul everything went off without a hitch. The major portion of the afternoon was devoted to a series of amateur athletic events, and during their progress the piping and dancing events were conducted simultaneously from three stands. At intervals bright; selections were played by the Wellington Natives' Association Band under Lieutenant Herd, there was not a (lull moment the whole afternoon. Special -interest attached to tile track events on .account of the presence of H. E. Wilson, whose prowess as a member of the team of athletes representing the N.Z.E.I'. in England and at Paris, attracted world-wide attention. His performances during the afternoon fully justified his reputation, especially in tho 120 yards hurdles. In this event he conceded 13 yards and one hurdle, and In won both his heat and the final with comparative ease, flying rather than hurdling over the sticks. lie did the final in 15 seconds—an Australasian record. In the -1-10 yards hurdles handi--c.np, which he hnd no difficulty in carrying off, lie also put up an impressive performance. In connection with the mile handicap it is interesting to note that the winner, A. AVyeth, of Masterton. is a son of Mr. Thomas Wyeth, who 51 years ago next January won the two-mile championship at. the Caledonian sports on the Basin Reserve. Tho veteran athlete, who looked very hale despite his age, witnessed his son's run and was delighted with his success. In • view of the forthcoming Australasian tour other points of interest connected with the track events were Ar B. Sievwright's performance in winning tho mile walk from scratch—an easy victory —and the prowess of G. Harvey, of Masterton, as a pole-vaulter. Naturally Scottish folk were present in full force, and they were keenly interested in the events of a purely national character. In the piping and dancing cla-sses there was good competition and tho standard of merit was high. As prelude to tho gathering on the Basin the society s Pipe Band, under Drum-Major Ilamish G. Duncan, marched through various parts of the city in the morning. A commencement was then made with tho dancing competitions, which were well Under way by tho afternoon.
