MANAWATU MEETING
! ORATRESS WINS PRESIDENT'S
HANDICAP
• STAKES WON BY ACRE . (Special Oorreßpondcnt.) , .. Palmerston North, December 27. rGlorio.us w;eather was experienced for tho second (lay of tlio Manawatu meeting. The Judicial Committee inquired into the fall in the first race, and found that it was accidental and was caused by Fiery Lass getting on tlio heels of another" Horse. Tlio totalisator handled <£5G,5G2, as against ,£3G,139 oil the second day last year.- — , ■In the. Kelvin Hack Handicap there tyas a duel for favouritism between Arch Saluto and St. Omer, and when the machine closed there was littlo between the pair. From a good start Fiery. Lass took up the running from Woody Glen and Railand, with Arch Salute in the rear. At the half-mile Woody Glen headed Fiery Lass and shortly afterwards the- latter fell and brought down Fisher. Woody .Glen was first into tlio straight, but in tlio run home Railand headed him and won by a neck. Arch Salute mis a leygtli away. St, Omer finished fourth.
Thero were only four runners in the To Matui Hurdles, Hushaliyo being a good favourite with the others evenly backed. Hautawa made play all the way, and though the field was always within. striking distanco the bottom weight held his own, and won all out by a length from Sail Home, with the other pair in a line. The winner has been racing a - long time, but this is his first win. Guanaco and Hvmarty were the- best backed in the Highdcn Hack Handicap, while Amberine, Tama-a-roa and Red Signal all hail good fallowings. Amberine and lied Signal were the quickest to begin, but Hymarty soon ran to the front, and rounding the bend she put n break, on Tama-a-roa, Amberine and Red Signal, who were locked together. The chestnut-mare saw it out well and won by several lengths from Pnonui. who camo from a long way back. Tama-a-roa was third and Guanaco next. The winner stripnod very well, and her win was fully anticipated by her connections. Bonnie Heather was withdrawn from ■ thj President's Handicap, leaving twelve runners. It was" a good betting race, •four of. the runners carrying over a thousand pounds apiece. Athens 11. was a slightly bettor favourite than Client. There was a splendid., start, Dribble setting the pace from Rose Pink, with Bagdad next. Down the back the leaders gave wav to Demos, who led li-to the straight. At the distance Oratress took charge and Moutoa Ivanova challenged her, but could not get up. Client finished verv. fast in third place after a bad passage. Bagdad was fourth. Despite her good showing on the opening day the winner was neglected on the machine. She has now struck form and may win a good handicap in the autumnShe will make her next appearance in thf" Morton Cup. , There were five runners m the .Palmerston North Stakes, the Chokebore colt ■ft inter Wind being favourite, with Acre second choice. The favourite was the last to-, move at the start, and Croesus led down.the back.with Ermine handyEntering the straight the field bunched anil at the dstance Acre and Winter ■Wind .left the others. In a ding-dong finish Acre won by a head with Tessares . si length away. It looked as if Winter .Wind was unlucky to lose. The Hack Welter Handicap was regarded as an open race, and half-a-do/en of the Tunners were well backed. The big field gave a lot- of. trouble at the barrier, and the start was a straggling one. Imaribbon got off first and led down tho back, where she gave way to Otaurn Kid. At tho him March On -headed the field, but once the straight, was reached. Imaribbon again took charge. However. War Baby finished strongly and' won by a couple of lengths from Imaribbon, with Moutoa Camp close ■up. Prince Hal finished fourth. Of tho eight runnel's in the Himitangi Welter Handicap Bonnie Heather was ' backed flown"To" a very short price. At no time did the favourite apnear dangerous. and he finished out of a place. Jean Laddo took charge at tho barrier rise and, attended by Snangle, led the field down the back. Spangle gave way nt'tho straight entrance, but Jean Laddo held on and won all out from Multainj, with Gol<l<diine close up. Ladogeur finished fourth. Chimera was at the, shortest price in the concluding event, and after a good , Tace sho--won -from Waimatao and /Maioha.' Jutland and Astinome made the early running from Waimatao. but once tho straight was reached Chimera camo through and won nicely. Manila, who got off badly., was close no third. The winner showed up well on the openin? day and got second place after being badly away. When at her best she is ; very" hard to beat, so may win again during the holidays. DETAILS OF THE RACING.
