The boats recently purchased in Christchurch for use on the lake in- the Hasterlon Park were officially "launched" yesterday afternoon by the Mayor, Ali. W. 11. Jackson, in the presence of a number of leading citizens and oilier wives. Prior to the foimal ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson entertained _ tlio visitors at afternoon tea in the Kiosk. Owing to a sudden storm coming w>, the Mayoral address was delivered in the Kiosk at the conclusion of the tea, and tho boats were declared ready for tho use of the public. Yesterday afternoon the Masterton district was visited by a sudden rain storm. The weather during tho morning and up to about 3 o'clock in the afternoon was fine, but clouds then appeared, and speedily turned to torrential rain, with the refinlt that many people were drenched to the skin. .. A' collision occurred at about 4.30 o'clock yesterday on the. corner of Queen and Bannister Streets, Masterton. The vehicles concerned were two taxis, which, in endeavouring to avoid one another, ended by crashing together. One car received damage to the frame work . ami the other was driven on to the fo.otDiith, where it was discovered that, one of the front tyres had been _ wrenched free. The drivers escaped injury. The death occurred at Masterton on Monday of the Rev. S. F. Prior, father of Dr. Prior. The deceased gentleman, \Wio -was held in very high , esteem by a wide circle of friends, bad attained the age of G8 years. Ho had been in indifferent health for some weeks past. Deceased had been associated with tho Methodist Church of New Zealand for many years, having arrived here after ministerial service in South Australia and Victoria. He was stationed at Masterlon from 18S0 to 1902, and made many friends in this district. He retired from the ministry a f< , w years back, and had fiince been residing in tbe north. Ho leaves a widow, one son (Dr. Prior) and three daughters, Mesdamcs Sinclair (Auckland) and Brnilsford (Melbourne) and Miss Prior (Masterton). Business people report that trade has been very brisk for the past week, indeed, even from the beginning of the month. It is evident from the number of people in the streets that this Christmas should be reminiscent of pre-war days so.,.far as tbe ebons are concerned. Tins year the High School grounds at Masterton have been chosen ns the sito for the annual North Island encampment of the Seventh Day Adventifts. Mr. H. A. Lukern- is superintending tho oreetion of 7G roomy tents for the accommodation of the visitors, who will number between three and four hundred. A lnrsre znnmuce will be used for public meetings, and a smaller tent will accommodate the young people's mission. Many prominent visitors are exnected. including Mr. C. Jf. Snow, of America, -editor of "Signs of the Times, and Mr. Robert Hare, of the Austnlinn Missionary College at Avomlale, New South Wales. The proceedings of the camp opened yesterday with tho "Workers' Institute." and this be followed by special meetings for tho public. The camp is in charge of Pay 1 tor A. W. Conn nek.
