SHIP'S WONDERFUL TRIP

An amazing achievement of salvage was revealed by tho arrival at Newcastle of the British steamship Ulid'a, in tow from North Russia. The vessel, a tramp steamer' of GOOD tons deadweight, was the property of tho Ministry of Shipping, and went aehoro at Soroka., in the AYlr.ta Eea, irhilo loading timber, in 1917. For two yeai-3 she lay there and would have remained and become a total wreck had not the All Seas Marine Salvage Company, of London, discovored lier. Work was begun at the end ,of Juno lost, and the ship was floated on the JasV'day o! August, leaking so badly 'that she was only kept afloat by a motor-pump (capacity 750 tons of watcf an hour) running continuously. A temporary wooden patch was put on. by tho divers and tho ship was towed to Archangel Faced with tfio prospect of tho British evacuation, tho Ulidia was sent on her perilous jo-urnoi— 22oo miles through, some of tho roughest seas in the world and at tho most dangerous season of tho year, Very heavy weather was encountered off the North Cape, leaks increased, and the sliip to\\h\ heavily, there being nt least'four-fort of water in tho engineroom while the holds were almost full. Men 'worked day and night in icy water, moving the pump suctions from one compartment to another where Hie situation suddenly became worse, with the knowledge that if tho. work were not done quickly the ship would fill up and sink with all hands. .
