ALLEGED ANTI-"DRY" CONSPIRACY Having read evidence given in October by an agont. of tie Department of Justice following his arrest on charges of corruption in connection with mo prohibition enforcement legislation, r>ew Yorkers are beginning to understand how it 1 has happened that they have been able to "obtain drinks with such easo sinco prohibition camo into force. According to Mr. William J. 1 linn, in charge of flhe Special Agents of the Department of Justice, a lw;o conspiracy lias been discovered between officers of the law and. hotel and restaurant proprietors in and around New York. Enormous bribes have been accepted* it is alleged, as the result of which violators of the law obtained immunity from prosecution o]' olse received warning when their premises were about to be rainen. Hundreds of thousands of dollars must have been paid in bribes, 1 lyiin states. U'Carver, the mail whoso evidenco was heard, mentioned as being conueniM in the conspiracy names of many highlyplaced persons, including a prominent Republican politician who is a candidate for high oflice, a member of the District Attorney's staff, two well-known city lawyers, several politicians, and various olHcials holding some of iilye niost important posts in tho City Administration.
