HIDE AND TALLOW SALES

The fortnightly sales of bides and tallow were held yesterday by the. various brokers. Messrs. Dalgcty and Co. report :- Wo submitted a fair catalogue of hides and tallow. Only a small proportion of tho catalogue v:ub selected by tanners prior to tho Bale,'and a number 9f medium and good calfskins offered realised

exceptionally high prices. Prices generally were oil a par with last sale, good conditioned medium heavy hides being if anything ft shade dearer. It has been decided to cancel the sale set down for January 2, and tlio next catalogue will be submitted 011 January 16. Messrs. Levin and Co. report that they submitted a fair-sized catalogue of superconditioned hides and calfskins, 'lanners did not exercise their right of selection quite so freely as 011 previous occasions; iu fact, they only selected superior and heavy ox and superior and light cow hides, leaving' tho medium, inferior, kips and yearling hides and the majority of calfskins to be submitted by auction. Competition was keen for lota not telecteu by tanners, consequently the market was firm all round at a slight advance. As compared with tho rates ruling at tlio sale held a fortnight ago, priccs showed an advance of id. to VI. for ox hides, yearlings, and kips were in keen request at lid. to 3d. above lato rates. . Calfskins were in good demand at tho high prices ruling when not selected by tanners. The tallow market was lirm at a slight declino upon rates ruling at the sale held a fortnight ago. > Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., offered a fair catalogue of all descriptions of hides.' Tanners made only a small selection from tlio catalogue, not taking any calfskins which realised high pricas. Prices all round were on a par with the last sale. Tho Wairarapa Farmers' Co-op. Association, Ltd., in -which is incorporated tho United Farmers' Co-op. Asociation, report a. good attendance of buyers, and priccs lirm. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., offered a catalogue of COO hides and calfBkins. Tho- market was firm at slight advance 011 last sale prices for hides, while calfskins sold at par. Tho N.Z. Association, Ltd.. stock department, held a clearing sale on account of Mr. \V. J. Hope, of Mauricevillc, 011 December 16. Competition for. dairy cows was very 6lack, but a good number were disposed of at an .average of £14 per head. Sheep; Dry ewes, in wool, brought £2 os. 7d.; cull hoggets. £1; ewes, ill wool, with lambs at foot, £2 6s. Cattle; Two-year steers, £4 10s.; two-year empty heifers. £6; store .c.otvs, £5 ss. to £6; brake horse, £18; gig, horse, and harness, £36. Pigs; Porkers, £3 95.; slips, 30s. 6d.: furniture and sundries realised good priccs.
