PROHIBITION LEADING
OVER CONTINUANCE AND STATE PURCHASE ISSUES
The licensing poll was overshadowed by the general election, and it attracted comparatively little public attention, at least in Wellington, until tho returns received in the. early pari) of the evenins,' IJC-giiii to show that State control had failed to attract the voters, and thali prohibition had n clianco of being earned. The figures available show that Wohibition has a small absolute majority. A large number of voles remain to be added, and tho decision is sure to be delayed by a recount.
According to the returns received in time to he included in the computation the voles recorded were:— NORTH ISLAND. Continuance 121,433 State Control 17,503 Prohibition ..' 138,931 Total votes 277,872 • SOUTH ISLAND. Continuance 50.543 State Control 9,898 •■ Prohibition 92,516 Total votes 182,957 Prohibition majority, 2065.
