Tho Palraerston North Borough Council has, with very good reason, prided itself on tho manner in which its squares' ara lcopt, and also on'the profusion of flowers with which they ore kept well 'supplied by the ourator. This i? moro especially tho caso with the portion setapart for rose beds. For some time past, however considerable annoyance has been caused by depredators who visit gardens at night and extract somo of tho very W blooms. With a view to putting a 6top to this practice, the council offered a reward of ,£lO for tho discovery of any of the offenders, and on Monday evening their pains were rewarded, A constablo who was on dnty in the vicinity saw someone stooping down behind a rose bush, and on making investigations discovered a man with a bunch of roses, in ono hand and a knifo in tho other. Ho was very much surprised naturally to find that lie had caught an ex-niem-ber of tho Borough Council in tho act of purloining blooms. The result was that the misguided gentleman appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning and was fined £o, and costs. Scmo little time ago the ■ Campbell Street School Committee in Pnlmerston North, through tho Education Board, called for tendon; for the erection of a hew infant school, but the lowest tender received was over .£3OOO in excess of tho amount voted by Cabinet. Mr. .T. A. Nash, M.P., has now been advised that Cabinet has agreed to increase the amount already voted by a further .£5500. This will enable a tender to be accepted, and tho work should bo gone on with very shortly.
