QUESTION OF CUT CARCASES DISCUSSED BY FARMERS' UNION. At a mezting of the AVellington Subprovincial Executive of the Farmers' Union, held at Palmerston North, the question of cut carcasses was discussed. A lotter was read from tho Dominion secretary of tho Fanners' Union, in which it was sfcatpd that it ihad como to the knowledgo of the union that an instruction had gone forward to tho freezing companies instructing them to cease cutting carcasses of mutton for the purpose of economising space. It was probably correct that from a trado point of view the cutting .of carcasses was a disadvantage, but in viow of lilio possibility of a glut in our stores during tho coming season it seemed undesirable that (his practico should be stopped unless wo could get some definite gnaranteo from the Imperial Government that sufficient ships would ho forthcoming to keep tho stores reasonably clear of meat. Ha understood that the freezing companies were considering tho question of making representations to tiho Government on this point, and he was directed by the president, Sir James Wilson, to put tho question before tho Wellington executive for consideration. This was a good opportunity to back up tho New Zealand Government in its representations for a definite assurance in regard to shipping. The Prime Minister should ho advised by each provincial executive that if tilio practico of cutting carcasses was stopped before they got a guarantee of reasonable shipping facilities there was extreme danger of a blockage on our stores, and consequent loss to tho producers.
The matter iraa discussed at length, and the following resolution was eventually carried: "That in view of tho shortage of shipping nnd tilio congested state of freezing stores, this executivo deems it impracticablo for the freezing companies to discontinue the practice of cutting carcasses until more shipping space is guaranteed. We therefore tak'o this opportunity of again urging the Government to make renewnd efforts to procure additional shipping to allow the practice of cutting carcasses to ceas"." MORE SHIPPING SPACE NEEDED. . By Teleirrapti-Press Association. Auckland, December 10. The Farmers Union executive pa?scd a motion in reference 1o the notice that tho Imperial Government is refusinj to accept telescoped mutton strongly urging the Government that whole carcasses cannot be exported unless there is moro shipping space.
