The effect of this work was to make them per t'ectly yellow, and it would take years for the colour to fade away. When first they took up this particular branch of shell-making, they wore masks and gloves, but as the cry for shells became iroro and liioi'e insistent, and the men in Franco and Belgium were suffering' for'want of them, these girls went to tho directors and begged that they might be allowed to work without the masks and the glomes, as they could net on so very, much quicker. Their request was acceded to. Miss Snelson also .described an aii' raid and its effect upon tho girls in one .of the factories. Tho warning signals had been given, and the barrage of the guns near the arsenal was heard, showing that the enemy airships were close at hand.
