MB,. J. P. LUKE AT THORNDON. The Methodist schoolroom, Molesworth, Street, was crowded to the doors with an orderly audience last night, on. the occasion of an address delivered by Mr. J. P. Luke, Reform candidate .for Wellington North. Mr. A. J. Curtis was in tlw chair. l

Touching on education Mr. Luke said that next to the cost of living it ranked highest in importance among all questions of tho Dominion. In- urgijig many reforms tho candidate said that neither tho schools nor the grounds, in many cases, redounded to tho., credit of • the country. School teachers should also bo paid salaries moro commensurate mith tho exacting demands of their profession- Mr. Luke also referred to local needs in educational circles. As bo tho land, closer settlement was going to bo the most important feature iii connection with greater production, and ho was in favour, of every attention , being paid to this important matter. Coming to hydro-electricity Mr. Luke said that this source of power had proved a great, boon to tlio province of Canterbury,- and it behoved the Government that was returned to power to prosecute the development of the Mangahao scheme for the Wellington province with all possible expedition. Looking to tho future, Mr. Luke said that ono of the greatest functions of tho Government was to exploit the natural resources of the Dominion.

At the conclusion of his address Mr. Luke was accorded a vote of thanks.

MR, H. OAKLEY BROAYNE. A meeting of Mr. H. Oakley Browne's men's committee was held at his main committee rooms last night, when progress reports were received from various centres. Mr. Browne will address tlio electors in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock. '
