Tho ovcracas vessel Ayrshire loaded 5599 carcasses of lamb, 26,685 carcasses of mutton, and 913 quarters of beef, and 386 bags of frozen sundries at Whakatane last week for England. It is etated' that loading was carried out without a hitch; in fact, tho depth at tho entrance to Whakatano River has now so far improved that thoro is not only plenty of water for lighters, but auxiliary scows can work the port at low water. This is considered striking evidence of the success of the harbour improvement works. Tho Whakatano Harbour Board is asking for a further £15,400 loan to continue the works. It iB stated that when the pinnacle rocks in tho main chanuel havo been Hasted out, a larger steamer than the Tasman, tho present Auckland-Whakatano steamer, will bo ablo to work the port. Tho Wootton, which Bailed for Lyttelton yesterday, is duo back on Sunday, and will sail again on Monday.
