ANNUAL SPORTS GATHERING

Yesterday will live long in the meinovy of those past and pr&sont boys of the Wellington College who attended the "old buys'" giithei'ing. -For live years, shicu t'JU, Hid win , put ii slop to Uiu annual gala day, but it has now been resinned, and will oncomoro be a yearly event, long lookwl forward to, and , lung remembered afterwards. Tho real importance of yesterday's function, however, was the reunion it provided for those who hud been serving King and country, and many old associations wero renewed on the college grounds. There wero many, it is true thai could not be renewed, but those present did not forget the boys who had fallen on the Held of battle.. Tlieii memory will be ever dear to ihe boys, past and present, and an effort is being made to perpetuate their memory in a war memorial. For this a simMM about iiOCO has been collected, leaving yet A'iM to bo collected. Tho opening ceremony, the welcoino to the old boys, was a most imposing one. With tho old boys on the steps, the present pupils gathered round ou th« green turf in the form of a semi-circle, in tho centre of which stood Mr. J. P. Firth, principal of tho college. Mr. Firth opened tho proceeding* by extending a hearty welcome to tho old boys. Ho then called on t'hs present boys to give threo cheers for those who wero gathered on the steps. This was enthusiastically done, and Mr. M. C. Uarnett, ex-president of tho Old Boys' Association, roao to return thanks, lie, apologised for tho absence of the Uon. A. it. Myers, president of the Old Boys' Association, who, he said, was busy in Auckland on his election campaign. ' lie then called upon Sir Francis Boil to Bay a few words. A remarkable exhibition race was given by Sergeant Wilson, one of the team of jMow Zealand athletes which competed in England. Mr. (J. M. Barnelt stated that it had been resolved to give tho boys tho prizes in thoso events which Sergeant Wilson won. He Hiniiked Sergeant Wilson for his exhibitions, and said that although they could not give him the prizes they would ever remembor his fiuo performances. Tho tennis champion was Mr. R. E.
