PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last night, when there- were present the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), Councillors J. L. Cliurchhouse, J. Kyle, W. Hay, A. Andeison, D. Bedingfield, O. Cook, and E. Tovey. The Minister of Lands wrote thanking the council for its suggestion that the remaining section of the Wilford Settlement should bo offered at once, and stating thai, he had brought the. matter before tho Commissioner of Crown Lands and nskod him to expedite the sale as much as possible. . . Intimation was received from the Prime Minister that he would look into the matter of coal supplies for the retail trade at Petone after his return to Wellington. Councillor Anderson suggested that an interview' be arranged with the Primo Minister, 'and the Mayor said he. would try to make- the necessary arrangements. A letter was received from the deputyhousing superintendent intimating that unless tho local authority desire to continue the present system of collecting tho rates on workers' dwellings, the Department would cease to collect them from tho oocupiers from April 1. 1920. It was decided that tho Town Clerk represent tho council at an interview to be arranged. As a result of the District Health Officer drawing attention to nuisances alleged to exist on certain premises, it was decided to give tho owners scyen days' notice to comply with requirements. The Town Clerk Lower Hutt, wrote stating that his council had authorised tho borough, engineer to furnish the information required as to the pay of borough workmen and asking that same be dealt with in committee and that the Petone _conn:;il forward the Hutt council particulars of the wages paid by it. A suggestion was also made, that a conference should take place between' both councils with the object of fixing tho system of pay, hours, holidays, etc. Advice was also received that the. borough pnsineer had boon instructed to confer with tho gas malinger with a view to arranging the gas pressures.
