ANNUAL MEETING OP SOCIETY. The ninth annual meeting of the Wellington Zoological Society was presided over by Mr. T. Fathers (president). Tilie annual report and balanes-shcet wore adopted, and the following' officers were elected Patron, Sir Robert Stout; viccpatron, Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P., Mn.vor of Wellington; president, Mr. T. Fathers, vice-presidents, Veu. Archdeacon Devoy> S.M., Rev. Dr. Pinfold, Rev. E. Drake, and Messrs. R, A. Wright. M.P., C. J. Lockwood, R. Brown, E. Read, 11. A. Parkinson, and R. Darroch; secretary and treasurer, Mr. ,T. Castle; auditor, Mr. R. 11. Chinchen. Tho following were elected to tho council for tlio ensuing yean—Mesdames T. Fathers, J. Castle, ,T. Pollock, S. 11. Underwood, and Messrs. J. Pollock, F. J. Caterer, S. IT. Underwood, It. H. Cliinelien, E. Collie, A. J. Martin, H. J. Crowes, R. Ferguson, A. Parker, G. Fownss, M. G. Grenside, F. Bennett, A. Crosby, J. Crewes, and liho secretary. The balanee-shcet showed a credit of .£C2 ss. A paper on the ''Zoo," as it has been and as it should be, prepared by Messrs. Castle and Crewes, was read, and a policy of co-operation with the City Council for the improvement of liho "Zoo" adopted.
Tho newspaper "La Nazionc," of Florence, announces that tho King of Italy will give up tho entire properties belonging to the Crown and grant largo tracts of land to peasants returning from tho war, while the buildings are to be used for pliilauliirropic purposes. The King will alf=o insist on his private l'ortuno being taxed like that of any ordinary citizen, and on a great reduction in his Household and Die Civil List,
