TRAMS TO LYALL BAY
REQUEST FOB IMPROVED SERVICE. Respecting the requests of blie Lyall Bay Municipal Electors' Association for an improved tramway service to the district, 'tho' acting-tramways manager (Mr. M. Cable) reported to the City Council on Thursday as follows: — (1) "That the Kilbirnie ears running to the boundary alternate with the Lyall Bay cars." Aβ stated in my previous report I am unable to recommend the diverting of Lyall Bay cars during heavy loading hours.to tiho tunnel route on account of tho necessity for reserving thie route for the Kilbirnie and Halaitai traffic. For lihe convenience of passengers travelling to Lyall Bay, it is proposed during the , midsummer months to run care to the bay via the tunnel route between 2 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. on fine days. (2) "That the etop at Boutell's corner be made compulsory." In view of the present position at the powerhouse, I cannot recommend the granting of additional compulsory stops at present. Tho stop in question is becoming a fairly important one, and further consideration will he given to tiie request when the position at tho poirer-house ie improved, (3) "That the 5.5 p.m. car lenve Courtenay Place instead of Lambton Station," This car loads heavily in the city; and consequently the granting of the request- would result! in inconvenience to a considerable number of passengers, and at the same timo increase the overloading on other ears. In order to relieve the position at Courtenay Place a, special.is now running ahead of the 5.5 p.m. car as fa* as Constable Street. (i) "Providing seats at etopping places." There is n<section-: at present vacant at the corner of Coutls Street and Onepu Road, but a.9 the position 'is exposed a seat placed there would be continually under repair. At Boutell'e corner permission conld probably bo obtained from the owner of the premises to fix a seat on the south side of the shop under the verandah. Being close to the wall it would not be likely to provo «n obstruction. In viovr' of the great' difficulty of securing- labour for- car building, I am of opinion that requests for. scats and waiting sheds should stand over for the time being. .' .
It was decided to Teply to the Municipal Electors' Association in the terms ol tlio acting-manager's report). .
