The play is an old favourite- Many of .tho situations in it arc intensely amusing, ami the 'dialogue' is of incbmparable brilliance. Last night's audience .laughed heartily.at the famous screen episode, in which the deceitful Joseph Surface falls a victim to his own pretty schemes. Tho minuet danced at the end.of tho first act was well received. A matinee performance will bo given to-day. J)u Manner's famous play, "Trilby, will be produced this evening. Mr. Wilb-! will Svengali and HunterWatts will characterise Trilbr. Tho 'box plan is now open at tho Bristol.

CHAUTAUQUA. Increasing interest is being shown in tho approaching Chautauqua Benson. A meeting of the local committee will be held on Monday for the puruoso of completing the arrangements. Reports from the northern centres aro said, to indicate that the programiw is creating a great deal of interest. The musical features of the programme are receiving the highest praise.. The "New Zealand Herald" says of the Zcd'.cr Symphonic Quintette: "Seldom has a better musical organieat:on been heard in Auckland." The Auckland "Star," sppaking of Femvick Ncwnll, makes the following comments "He is a fine lyric tenor—one of the best we ]wivo heard on tho concert platform." The Lyric Quintette, of Auckland, especially Alan M'Elwain, the entertainer,' are proving groat favourites. The lecture.; of tho programme aro on edncnt:cna'l and inspirational subjects. Mr. Aubrey Williams, cf Wellington, is joining the Chautauqua Association on December 5 for a three weeks lecture tour, speaking on "Bolshevism." Mr. spent five years jn Russia prior to tho war, and after serving three years witli the N.Z.E.F., returned to Russia, anil was an eye-witness of the Revolution. Tho Chautauqua season will open in. tho Town Hall on December 4, and will continue until Deepmber 10.
