FINE DISPLAY OF BLOOMS

'L'ho annual exhibition of blooms of the Wellington Kose and Carnation Clul> wm hold yesterday afternoon and evening in the 'iiiivii Hull. Tho season has not been favourable for rose-growers. The wmtlitT has been against the gardeners and tho season lias been late; noverthslesi; Uio quality of the blonins exhibited in the opinion of Hie judges compared favourably with any similar display in the Dominion. In past years many of the nurserymen sent in fine exhibits, but ov.in-- t'j tho lateness of the season there wen) no displays from this source yesterdav. One missed the exhibits of Messrs. W. E. Lippiatt, of Auckland, James Liiiv'l, of AVanganui. and G. Trevethick, of Lower Hutt. The display made by the amateurs was exci>ptionally meritorious, and the champion bloom in the show was grown in a little cottage srar<!on in Karori Road, by Mr. A. J. Styles. Tho blbom (Mrs. W. J. Grant) was very lino fi'on , . every point of view and deserved tho honour accorded it. The carnations were missing and the sweet peas vi're not plentiful, but Mr. Westbury's display was particularly good, although they were not eligible for the st'i'Hnn in which they wore entered.

The sliow was opened by His Excellency th'i Governor-General (the Enrl of Liverpool) once again. The president of tho club (Mr J- B. Hnrcourt), in introducing 'His Excellency, referred to tho very meritorious display mailo by the amateurs, and' suggested that the limitation of five miles should I>e exteiid'rl. TTn also reforred to the rose gar-lon at tho Zoo. which at the present time was very inviting.

His Excellency said be was pleased to bo again present at the annual rose show. He had been in Wellington fur ppven yeai'3 and understood some of tho difficulties of Wellington gardeners, but nevertheless he hoped they would continue, to get the best out of their littlo plots.
