WELLINGTON CENTRAL
MB. M. CAKE, ASKED TObTAND,
A mooting of business men interested in a proposal to get Mr. 21. Carr to stand as a candidate for Wellington Central was held in tho Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr. S. Campbell, who was voted to the chair, urged that Mr. Car; , should come forward and contest the seat, and spoke confidently of his prospects of success if ho did bo. Mr. S. Histoid Mr. A. E.. Mobin, and othersexpressed similar views, and a resolution was carried asking Mr. Cam '.o meet the wishes of the deputation, Mr. Can , , in replying, stated his willingness to stand, provided Mr. Pirani would retire from the contest. A triangular contest, Mr. Carr thought, would only play into the hands of tlie Labour extremists. Subsequently a deputation was appointed to approach Mr. Pirani on tho subject.
Mr. Fred. Pirani writes: "I desire-to contradict tho impression abroad that I was asked by a deputation to retire from tho contest for Wellington Central in favour of Mr. Carr, and that, in consequence of my refusal,. Mr. Oarr would not lie a candidate. I was not approached in any way, except to he fold that Mr. M. Can- had been asked, and could not stand because of business arrangements preventing his becoming a candidate. As a matter of fact, the political situation has altered so greatly during the last fnw days in favour of my chances that nothing will prevent me going to tho puil on.December On inquiry last evening Mr. Carr stated that it was not now his intention to contest the seat.
