All "At Sea" on the Navy,
A southern newspaper contains tho following roport of remarks mado by a Labour candidate:—
Tho candidate noxt dealt with the navy question. Sir James Allen, he Bttul, hnd visited England, and there had committed this country to a local navy, and had appointed a naval adviser against the advico of the Brilißh. Admiralty. So that to-day New Zealand, without anyone's sanction and through Sir James Allen's tyrannical propensities, might bo saddled with the upkeep of a navy that would be of little use in defence.
This breozy collection of inaccuracies scarcely Tcquircs ronly. Sir Jamei) Allen has not committed this country to a local navy. He hoe never had the power to do so. oven if ho had the will. The naval adviser was appointed on the recommendation of tlio Admiralty, wlio supplied a suitable officer. Mr. Maesey has stated that Lord Jellicoe's report, which is the only detailed naval defence policy before tho country at the present time, is being held over for consideration by the new Parliament. Tho Government has accepted the offer of a new light cruiser, which certainly cannot be described as "of littlo tiso in defence." In the Neck. "You say that this extreme Red Fed. section ia very email, ana■' chicken-neart-ed. How do you propose to deal with it?" was a question asked of Mr. Dunbar Sloano at Khandallah on Tuesday ovening. The Liberal candidate, in reply, said, "I would givo it to them where the chicken got tho axe." (AppL-rase.)
