AUCKLAND EAST CONTEST

POSITION OF LIBERALS DESPERATE LIBERAL-LABOUR UNDERSTANDING PllOli.-VBLE. By-Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. Auckland, November 21. Tho Auckland East contest is now attracting more.attention than any of the other political battles* in and around Auckland. The. position of tho Liberals is desperate; and the general opinion is that their only hope now lies in tho withdrawal of the Labour candidate. It is freely rumoured that Mr. Way fluty retire shortly before tho polling day. It would then bo too lato for tho official Labour Party to put up a substitute nnd tlie election would resolvo itself into a straight-out fight between Mr. Mvers and Mr. Mackenzie. Tho fact that an understanding between the Liberals and official Labour in Auckland East is regarded as possible and even probable shows that tlio general public does not put much faith m the protestations of the. Liberals that they will bave_ nothing to do with the Labour extremists. _ Possible happenings in Auckland Last, make it more nnd more evident to believers in stablo government that tho only alternative to Reform is a feeblo and clTete Liberal administration, whose tenure of office -would depend upon the sympathy and support of Messrs. Sen)pie, Holland, Eraser and Co. The hard-pressed-Liberals of Auckland Last are sending out signals of. distress. I he, public is curious t.O know' whether Labour will rush to tho rescue.
