CENTRAL CAMPAIGN
MR. PIRANI AT ARO STREET A NOISY MEETING All tlio body of the hall ami nil the windows and doors and porches and stairways of tho Aro Street .Mission Hall were ciovidod last night, when Mr. !''• Firani, tho Liberal candidate, made.nnother attempt to address the electors of AVellingtoii Central. For Mr. Pirum was again only partly successful. It is quite a little Ji/ill, and Mr. Pimm li:is a good carrying voice, but so had miinbsrs of other people in the room, inchidiii? some women. Indeed, it seemed
inetimes as if everybody in. the meetiiw; was shouting at once. t / Mr. Pi rani dealt with such topics as land settlement, housing, Labour and Labour disputes, and education, and a host of other topics suggested by the continual interruption. He straggled against the unequal odds for a little moro than an hour, and then lie struggled with about a hundred questioners. He was subjected to a very hostile demonstration, and sonio hard names, when ho declared that. Messrs. Holland and Fraser had voted against giv.ng the soldiers a bonus when they voted against ..the third reading of Expeditionary Forces Amendment Bill in 1918. After all the questions n vote of thank's was proposed and seconded. Then a Labour supporter moved: "That this meeting line no confidence in Pirani to represent this constituency or any other constituency in this country." Th:s amendment the chairman put to the meeting. There was a pood response in favour of the amendment, and apparently the sunporters 'of Mr. Pirani were over-awed. At any Tate,, thoy did not respond strongly. The chairman did not at once give a decision on the voting, but in a moment or two he declared the amendment out of order, for the reason that "this meetill" line nothins tn do with any constituency but Wellington Central." Then someone submitted another amendment: "That til's meeting has -no confidence in Mr. Pirani as a representative of this constituency." When this amendment was nut to tlie meeting the volume of the "eyes" overshadowed the response from Mr. Pirani's friends. Thero was such an uproar that it was iniposs'ble to hear wlknt the chairman said, but it is qi.ite certain that the amendment was carried.
