CONFERENCE WITH THE EMPLOYEES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, November 2-i. Tlio butchers' strike continued to-day without incident. Wliilo the big firms report ample supplies of frozen meat, tho shop of .0. Held was closod down at !l o'clock this morning through a shortage of supplies. Tho strength of tho strikers is much about tho same, the only alteration being a .diminution caused by the return to work of three A.M.C. employees. Tliis, however, had not affected- the position as far as the shops ore concerned. Tho actual number'on striko is 240. comprising 226 in varied branches of tho trade, and H managers. The Auckland Moat Company have had 29 men and 13 managers return to work from the original forco that downed tools. Together with those who remained at work and auxiliary labour engaged, the company is attending to what practically emounts to an assault on supplies, the demand being unceasingly heavy. A conference between the butchers on strike and the employers was held to-night, tho Conciliation CommissiDiier presiding. Iu tho course of a hngthy discussion it was stated for the wen that a butcher's present wage was not a living wago, but merely an existence. Tho men folt justified m the action they had taken, and wcro prewired to stand' to their action. Mr. Wright, the employers' odvncnto, said tho men ill striking had m;;do tho employers and tho public their ciitspaw. Tho real disputo was between the Arbitration Court and the union. Summing up a long discussion, the Commissioner said it seemed that tho union was mainly concerncd about the rate of wages of tho lowest paid men. The Commissioner put to tho employers tho union's demand lor a flat rate of .fl a week, and was answered by the employers that they could not consider il. and that tho only liojio of a Bill (lenient was to bring the matter beforo tho Arbitration Court at its sitting in Auckland. .Eventually an adjourn-iiaut to Thursday was agreed to.
