The Takapuiia Jockey Club was favoured with fine weather for the first day of its spring meeting. The going was cood and Ihe attendance was a record. The new rows of terraces make it possible for everyone to get a good view of the racing, anrt this, combined with the enlarged track, makes tho Takapuna grounds one of the best courses in New Zealand. The oilier works are still in progress. Tho twentv-one horses in the- Melrnse Handicap got away on even terms, Pretty Ethel leading for half the distance. Three furlongs from homo Miss Ellice shot to the fiont, and was never again headed. Renting Clonmel by about a lenislh. Formalin, coming very strong, finished fourth.
