Vice-Rehal. His Excellency the Governor-General is to make an extensive farewell tour of the South Island before taking up his residence, at Chr.'stchtireh for the Christmas and New Year season. Leaving Wellington on Thursday next, His Excellewy, accompanied by the Countess of Liverpool, Captain Tahu Rhodes (military secretary), Mr., flavin Hamilton (private secretin , }-), and .Mr. Sinclair Thomson, A.D.C., will leave for l'icton and Blenheim, and after 'being farewelled in tho>e places, will visit ITaveloek, Nelson, Woslport, Greymoiilh. lieefton, Hokitika. then, crossing by way of the Ot : ra Gorge, will proceed to Invercargill and tho Rlulf on a similar mission. The Yice-Hegal parly expect to reach Christchurch on December i) or II), and will remain there for some live or six weeks.

On Saturday morning tho General Assembly of the Presbyterian Chinch of New 'Zealand considered the application of candidates for .the Chair of Old Testament Language and Literature and Church History. There were two appl""cantii—Key. .Tames Gumming, Khandallah,. Wellington, and ]fev. Jlector MaeLean, Knox Church, liivomu'gill. On ii vote being taken the Tfev. James dimming was appointed. Tho death took place to-day of Mr. Edward Alphonsus Burke, in hi* 75th year, well known for many years as travelling representative for M. O'Brien Ltd., Ohristclmreh, boot niamitacturors. Ilavinjr travelled the Nelson, Marlbqrongh, Wesli Const, and North Island districts for a quarter of a century, ho was widely known and highly respected as a veteran of the road. Ho 'has been n pioiir ecr of the West Coast since 18C5. The deceased leaves a family of five dnughiters, all well known on the West Consn, also one eon, Mr. ,T. ,7. L. Air. I{. Al.-Isaacs, who has been chief clerk in the Invercargill district railway traffic manager's office for many years, has been promoted to a similar position in Ghnstchurch. Air. Isaacs took a keen interest in Rugby -football, cricket, and rowing , in the south.
Mr. Malcolm Eraser, Government Statistician, left Wellington by tho Jlanuka on Friday, en route- to Ihiglnml, wliej'o ho will attend the .Statistical Conference.
A[r. .Robert Howan, a well-known officer of the Department of Agriculture, who died recently at Auckland lit tihe ago of lifty-eight, was well known in Wellington. .Mr. liowo-n was formerly Fields Inspector, Suiicrvisor, and instructor in tho Auckland district. Prior to that he was Kabbit inspector in the South island, and subsequently inspector of Stock for the Taranuki district.
Mr. B. J. M'Gnwan, nfliei'r in charge of the Valuation Department, Auckland, is retiring on superannuation, after 12 years' service. Ho is u brother uf the late Mr. John M'.Gownn, Commissioner of Taxes, and- for H,me years was in charge of the land tax branch of tho Land and Income Tax Department at Wellington, and has occupied the position from which ho is retiring for sonic--15 years.
