I '. ■ conference op flour- ; ! ; • millers:;;;:;;;;;..::.! ': ■ , By Telooranh—Press A«oclatlon. • Christchureh, November 21. ■ The official report of the conference of Dominion flourmillers stated that the conforenco was convened for the purpose of considering tho arrangements under which next season's' business, in respect to wheat, bran, and pollnrd was to bo conducted. Various other matters affecting the trade were also dealt with, 6uch'ns the prospective shortage of wheat supplies. .In regard to.the latter subject,'it was generally .considered . from the evidence gathered by millers, that tho quantity of wheat available next year, including', the , importation of 2.000,000 bushels of Australian wheat by the Government, would probably not bo in excess of requirements if the area estimated to be sown some time ago was not realised owing to unfavourable weather '.. .In all probability -there would be barely . enough .to meet Dominion's requirements; .-Reliable 'data'.was not yet available. On this point the conference passed tho following, resolution as affecting the .future supply: "That the Government bo'urged to talce steps to secure that sufficient wheat for the country's requirements be grown in the. Dominion, thus obviating the necessity • for largo importations of this cereal." It was the general opinion, of; tho conference that tho policy to give effect to this resolution should rest with tho Government, and it was hoped thnt the Government would be im mewed with' the precarioiisnessof the situation and not rely imon outside countries for its wheat supply. ; In. connection with next year's arrangements with the ' Government for handling wheat and flour, 1 the conference waited upon Jfr. W.' 1 G. M'Donald,' Wheat Controller, who informed tho'members that it was tho Government's intention to continue the present system of controlling and fixing prices.'" The guaranteed mininvum prices were ss. Gd.. ss. Bd.. and ss. lOd. per bushel for Tuscan, Hunters, and Pearl, respectively, -but there woukl_ probably be an upward revision of prices if> the market warranted it. He also stated that should it become evident that a shortage of wheat was probable, steps would bo taken to meot the needs of the country by further importations of wheat. :The following committee wns elected: Messrs. J.- Renne (Christchureh). P. J. Corson (Christchureh), R. ' Gardner fCust), R. Kicol (Waimnte), R. K. Ireland (Oamnru). .1. Love (Dunedin), and H. Tolley (Feilding). !The price of flour, .which has been 10s. per ton below the Government fixed price, has now been, raised to .£ls peT ton at South Island: ports. • . ■"■ I
