The Tahiti, now discharging Melbourne cargo at Port Chalmers, is to sail early next week for Newcastle, where she ivil bunker, and then proceed to Melbourne to load another shipment of merchandise for Now Zealand. Tho Union Company's largo steamor Leitrim, running under the auspices of the New Zealand and African Company, which arrived at Auckland on Wednesday left Avoiiiiiouth on Monday, September 15, arriving at New York on September 26. They spent about elGven days at that port, getting away just in time to escape the huge shipping sLriko which paralysed Araeucan trade for some weeks. In New York she took in about 7000 tons of general cargo, ot which 1700 tons are for Auckland, including the long-looked-for engines of the Takajiuna- Tramways Company. The tug Terawhiti arrived this morning from Wellington, and began operalions on the Karori. Later. The result of pumping operations by the tug Terawhiti is. uiosr- satisfactory. At 9 o'clock this evening the draught of the Karori wan normal, and at 10 the pumps wore draining her hold. It is now simply a matter of keeping the inflow in check. The fires have been lit in the stokehold. It is expected that an agreement will bo come to to-morrow between the Union Company and the waterside workers in regard to the rates of pay for dischargiug the coal. The mishap to the Karori at the present time, -when the pressure ot coal tonnage is so acute, is most unfortunate. The vessel had been fixed to load general cargo at Duncdin and produce at Timaru for Auckland, and the Union Company have not been able to allot another vessel to take the Karori's berth. The ledge on which the Karori struck lies on the channel side of Quarantine Island. It was at this spot that the Huddart-Par-ker liner Ulimaroa struck and suffered serious damage to her hull over ten years ago, which necessitated her occupying the dock at Lyttelton for some time, undergoing repairs: The former Union Company steamer Warrimoo also touched Die ledge some years ago, but escapcd serious damage.
