Colonel Mitchell,' in referring to the wax. said th;it the soldiers of New ZcalaiHf had fought for certain rights, which they now found on return home were not existent. They had come back to the country only to bo faced ]jy speculation, aggregation of land, profiteering, and strikes. Tho soldier did not fight for these at all. A voice: He did not fight for Seinple, either! (Applause.) Continuimr. the candidate Raid that the great problem in tho Dominion now was that, of land settlement. The promiso to cive sokiiers land on their return home had not been carried out. Only 4,0(10 soldiers had been fettled on the land in two vears. To his knowledge thero were another 30M soldiers looking for land in the country, but no land was available (it tho present time for the purpose. In this connection he favoured a graduated tax on large estates for the purpose of breaking them up. He also advocateo' thn nationalisation of the coal mines of Uip country. Thiouahout his address the candidate was subjected to a. running fire of interiections from a section of the audience, who were manifestly extremists, and on one. occasion the polico had to intervene. A. vote of thanks and confideneo in the candidate iras declared' carried by tho chairman on ii show, of hands.
