(Py "Chanticleer,") Production Needed. No oiil' can accuse the Canterbury JCijit Circle of being Ecllish. 'I'hc committee liuu decided on a vigorous canipaiiju for Can- .. tcrlmry to imurovu tiie methods of marketing aiul incre'ine production, Prices for cfrga iiiiii oiiltry arc liign. and to increase production will mean a reduction iu price, to tlut those producers who are scllish should keep iiuiet, and enjoy the prices tho shortage ot eggs is bound to give. On tlio other naud, production rnouid be oneouraeed. ft- gives tlie industry ratability and creates a iiemand isr stcek thai thoL-u now engaged in the work can supply, 't'lii: circle in out for production. It intends to encourage its uiewibci's to calcr more for eggs ami poultry so that'more money may liu brought into the country, and tne iu-dusu-y given the impot'tanco it liesei'vcs. On the committee 'are some of the largest and best producers, men who have inaitc (rood themselves, and can pass; on reliable information to others. At liangiora, a meeting is to be held at which Jlesni's. l.iilgins, .Marsdcn, and Jlerrett' will speak. Farmers will be told of tile up-to-dals method of keeping poultry and' the best weans of marketing. At Kaiapoi early next mouth tiie wiioie ot the committee will attend :i meeting of those interested ill poultry, and fix ol the committee will give short addresses covering the most important features of pbultry-keepiu;. That increased production'is needed is obvious. Orders for thousands of dozens of eggs have been refused by the Canterbury ngg Circle this season, as there appears to be a- great shortage in most of the centres. Tho high price obtained ior the eggs is iudicat:vo of the demand. ' The price is not too high, when the cost of lood is considered Compared with other years, the increase in price is noticeable, but the trouble is thai in previous years, the eggs havo been to-.- low in price. There has not been sutiicient margin of rolit for tho producer. Organisation has done much to secure a just- return, and the price now ruling is fair. It is to the farmers we must look for extra production In years past the prices for eggs and poultry have been so low as lo discourage tho keeping of poultry, Light years ago ducklings and table chickens sold from os. to Bs. per pair, now the same quality birds are now sold from 125,t0 16s. iiggs usi'd to sell from Bd. to 10d., now they are Is. 6d. to Is. 9d. pet- dozen.. This increased price chould induce the farmer to produce moro poultry, lie has the land. feed,, awl buildings, and should supply the demand. Tho Luro of Numbors. When a besinner contemplates poultrykeeping ho usually starts with pencil and paper, and Is engrossed in multiplication. Jle reads that a profit of £1 per bird may bo made, and he straight-away imagines if he kept 10*0 birds liu could make £1003 per year—in fact, quite a number start oil' with tho determination to keep -'.CCO. That is generally the modest estimate of the ■animated, ile soon finlß the delusion. It takes a very good mail to euro lor COO birds, replenish his stock, cull, and generally manage the plant. If well done, it moans £6 per week for himself. If a corresponding amount of energy and enthusiasm aro displayed he can care for 10C0 birds, but such men are the exception, and are endowed with plenly of grit and system for working. Too many poultry, keepers keep quite a number of birds that make no profit. A select flock is ivhat a. producer should aim it. Establish tho strain, then set the standard high, and unless a. bird comes up to the standard discard it. In ignorance birds are kept that do not lay enough eggs to pay for me feed they consume, 'and others aro kept at the expense of the good lnvors. Tins makes work and keeps down profit. On an ordinary farm it is safe to estimate that not half the birds pay for their food. Culling is the essential. . It is difficult to define the laying type, bul close observation will reveal the waster. An examination of the bird will show it has n tendency to accumulate fat. lis lay bones aro close together, and abdominal development Is small. These birds should not be kept. They deceive by brieht eye and comb, but.these indicate good health and not laying capacity.'. The best producers of are active birds, always on tho move. In shape they aro long and deep in body. They are firs-t off the perch, and last to retire. Their well-tilled crop at night indicates they need a lot of food for.egg elements. A small crop shows a poor layer. The tail is well worn through frequency with the nest. 'In White leghorns the shanks will pale, if pigmented with yellow there is not much work tbne. Select, heiis of this type. Discard the wasters. Xcver mind how ma'nv it reduces tho flock; It pays to care well for tho feed. Numbers are fasciifting, but they aro apt to deceive. EGG-LAYING UTILITY CLUB'S COMPETITION.
